New Super Mario Bros World 1-2: A Mixed Bag of Fun and Frustration

As I completed New Super Mario Bros World 1: The Twelve Magic Orbs, a hack by Pink Gold Peach, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. Some levels had great themes and were fun to play, while others left me feeling frustrated and unsatisfied.

One of the biggest issues I faced was the lack of consistency in the level design. Sometimes, I would find myself stuck on a particular level with no clear path forward, only to discover that beating another level wouldn't unlock anything new. This was especially true in World 10, where a bug prevented me from progressing further.

The hack also suffered from some annoying graphical glitches, such as sudden pallet swaps and screen flashing during levels. While these issues were mostly just frustrating, there were times when they made it difficult to play, like in the castle of World 6.

On a more positive note, there were some fun levels and gimmicks throughout the hack. The inclusion of custom power-ups, such as the 'fart boost' mushroom, added a new layer of excitement to the gameplay. I also appreciated the Warp Whistle feature, which allowed me to quickly navigate the overworld.

However, not all was perfect in this hack. The reverse control level trope, where Mario's controls are flipped on their head, felt like an unnecessary challenge. Additionally, the use of SMB3 sprites mixed with SMW ones didn't quite sit well with me, although at least Mario himself retained his classic SMW sprite.

The bosses were all variations of the custom 'jump on 'em 5 times' Koopa Kids, which felt a bit uninspired. Overall, while there were some enjoyable moments in New Super Mario Bros World 1: The Twelve Magic Orbs, I wouldn't recommend it to others due to its numerous issues and frustrating gameplay.
